Today’s local music scene is teeming with budding artists and the newest one we’ve discovered is Denice Lao, a singer-songwriter. She just released her first single ‘Just Got Home’ and held her official music launch at Jess & Pat’s last October 9.
Amidst the very personal introductions to the songs and the long list of music Denice played are some realizations we can take note of.
1. Perspective is Everything
Denice shares that ‘Just Got Home’ was actually written at a time she looked at life negatively which came in evident in the lyrics of the song. Focusing on the misses with lines like “too late for the night” and “too early for the sunset” rather than seeing how time gives us a chance to look forward to what’s to come. Denice expounded “I failed to see that tomorrow there’s another sunset, one where I will be able to enjoy much much better. That it’s never too late for the night, that I was at the time I was meant to be at.”
2. Who You Surround Yourself With is Important
One of the notable things of this launch is how everyone, from the friends playing with Denice to her line up was part of her journey. She shares how each one of them helped to get to where she is now with her music.
3. Take Your Time
Denice sang 11 songs that night, 10 of which are unreleased songs she is set out to launch in the future. All of these songs were part of her journey to becoming better. She has been writing songs for a decade now and performing for 5 years but it took for her to be emotionally ready to finally release her music. She shared how important this is when going through the journey to experience everything with an open and happy heart.
